Canon to Release Two EOS M Cameras and More Lenses in 2020: Report

If you were worried that Canon was going to do away with the EOS M lineup of APS-C mirrorless cameras, it seems you have nothing to fear. Recent reports indicate that Canon has two new EOS M cameras in the works, as well as a few new lenses.

Today’s report comes from the ever-reliable Canon Rumors, and it backs up a report posted by CanonWatch in February. According to CR, Canon will follow up the release of the full-frame EOS R5 and EOS R6 with two new EOS M cameras: possibly the EOS M50 Mark II and an EOS M5 Mark II.

Additionally, Canon is reportedly working on “more prime lenses for the EOS M mount,” which will also be announced in late 2020 after all the full-frame announcements have been made. According to the CanonWatch report from February, these primes might be joined by a new EF-M 18-45mm f/2-4 IS STM as well.

Whether or not it’s wise, in the long run, to keep its APS-C and full-frame mirrorless offerings on separate mounts is up for debate; developing lenses for multiple mounts can spread R&D thin, while discontinuing a lens mount entirely can leave loyal users holding obsolete gear. Whatever the thought process, it seems Canon isn’t going to let the popular EOS M series die any time soon.
